Biography

Octavio Martínez Argüello is currently director of the Latin American Center for Competitiveness and Sustainable Development (CLACDS) at INCAE Business School, where he also works as a professor of business strategy. 

He has been a consultant in the formulation and implementation of strategy in companies in the food and beverage, agro-industrial, pharmaceutical, energy, financial and real estate sectors. He is a partner of bac & Asociados, a consulting firm specialized in the strategic transformation of companies in Latin America. Previously, he developed experience in operations management with Wal-Mart de México y Centroamérica.

He earned a Ph.D. in Business Strategy from the University of Toronto, Rotman School of Management. He also has an MBA (with High Distinction) from INCAE Business School, and a Bachelor of Industrial Engineering (Cum Laude) from the American University (UAM). 

His academic research on vertical integration strategy, contracts and geographic location of companies has been awarded several times by the Academy of Management, the world's leading professional association of academics and business administration consultants. 
He has also been invited to give lectures at Harvard University (HBS), University of Pennsylvania (Wharton), New York University (NYU Stern), Washington University in St. Louis (Olin), Instituto de Empresa (IE), University from Duke, Boston University (Questrom), Insper and Universidad Católica de Chile.

Octavio Martínez Argüello is currently a professor of competitive and corporate strategy at INCAE Business School. He has been a consultant in strategy formulation and implementation, as well as in the evaluation of investment projects in companies in the food and beverage, agro-industrial, energy and real estate sectors. Previously, he developed experience in retail operations management with Wal-Mart de México y Centroamérica. He earned a Ph.D. in Business Strategy from the University of Toronto, Rotman School of Management. He also has an MBA with high distinction from INCAE Business School, and a Bachelor of Industrial Engineering (Cum Laude) from the American University (UAM). His academic research on issues of vertical integration strategy and the geographic location of companies has been awarded several times by the Academy of Management, the world's leading professional association of academics and consultants in business administration. He has also been invited to lecture at Harvard University (HBS), University of Pennsylvania (Wharton), New York University (NYU Stern), Washington University in St. Louis, Instituto de Empresa (IE), Duke University, Boston University and Catholic University of Chile. Before obtaining his doctorate, he served as a Senior Researcher at INCAE, where he developed a collection of 15 teaching cases used in the master's and executive education programs that the institution teaches in Latin America. This collection includes topics on business and financial strategy, competitiveness, marketing and sales in transnational and local companies.
