Corruption and COVID-19: opacity is a health risk

By Jaime Garcia, Senior Researcher and Director of IPS Projects

Recently the organization Transparency International published the update of its global indicator on the state of corruption in the world (ICP); an index that classifies 180 countries and territories according to the perception of experts and businessmen, and that ranges from 0 to 100 points, where 0 is high corruption and 100 is low corruption. This year the countries with the highest scores are Denmark, New Zealand, Finland, Singapore, Sweden and Switzerland; while the countries with the highest levels of corruption are Venezuela, Yemen, Syria, Somalia and South Sudan.

The slope of January in 2021

By Jaime Garcia, Senior Researcher and Director of IPS Projects

Typically the "January slope" is a term used to refer to that time of the year in which the expenses incurred during the end of the year holidays suffer along with the price increases, rates, and starting rates of each year and that affect people's purchasing power. But in 2021 this slope may have other implications as well, especially if we consider that we come from a 2020 year affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and its respective economic and social impacts.

COVID-19, vaccine, christmas and new year

By Jaime Garcia, Senior Researcher and Director of IPS Projects

When writing this text, the COVID-19 virus has continued its advance in the world, the infections are already more than 70 million and the deceased exceed a million and a half. Some European countries have already suffered a second wave that in some cases has been up to 5 times greater than the first wave in February and March. In America, the United States continues to break records of deaths and infections; While in our region, where we had managed to stabilize the spread and stopped the exponential growth, accelerated growth in the number of infections began to be registered, and the December holidays could accelerate the spread of the virus (in these first days of December we have had the highest mobility of people in the region since the first week of March).

Trump was right

By Jaime Garcia, Senior Researcher and Director of IPS Projects

Amid the complicated electoral process in the United States, and the division that the numbers show, President Donald Trump's main campaign slogan, "Make America Great Again" or in Spanish, "Make America Great Again" takes a great relevance. And it is that when looking at the performance of the country in social and environmental indicators such as those measured by the Social Progress Index, important lags come to light on issues that should not concern the community. world's largest economy, almost 23.6% of the global economy, in terms of Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Against COVID-19: Hammer or Squeaky Chipote?

By Jaime Garcia, Senior Researcher and Director of IPS Projects

The strategy followed by our countries in the face of the pandemic has consisted mainly of “flattening the curve”. That is, to reduce the speed of transmission of COVID-19 so as not to saturate the capacity of health systems, through measures of distancing and social isolation, including border closures, vehicle restrictions and control of citizens' freedom of movement. .

Strategy for the continuity of employment and production while the plague lasts: a tripartite approach from the communities

By Jaime Garcia, Senior Researcher and Director of IPS Projects

During this pandemic crisis, it has been found that the most successful countries in controlling the COVID-19 virus are those that have been able to develop solid national strategies using data and scientific evidence as in Uruguay y Germany, but they have also had efficient responses from the local level as in Tokyo o Seoul, and discipline individually as shown by the New Zealanders.

The unemployment pandemic

Jaime García, CLACDS / INCAE Researcher and Project Director of the Social Progress Index. June 22, 2020

The Coronavirus has come to deteriorate the standard of living of billions of people in the world; and of course, not only do you have to think about the infected, who are already counted in millones; or the hundreds of thousands of deaths.

The "new normal" of tourism

By Jaime García, CLACDS / INCAE

One of the sectors most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic has been tourism. The World Tourism Organization (OMT) estimated a drop of 22% in the first quarter of the year internationally; and various scenarios are contemplated according to how quickly the borders can be opened and international visits can be reactivated.

Safe opening of the national economy

By Roberto Artavia L. and Jaime García from INCAE Business School

As of March 6 of this year, a good part of INCAE's faculty and staff has dedicated long hours to supporting companies, sectors, and institutions throughout the Central American region in their adaptation to the conditions created by the SARS pandemic- CoV-2. In particular, presentations have been organized related to the risk posed by the pandemic and its impacts on the population, social progress, national and sectoral economies, and how strategies and structures will have to be adjusted to face a different future. Our support is mainly at the conceptual, analytical and planning level.

The new normal

By Jaime García. CLACDS

The strategy followed by our countries has been to “flatten the curve”. That is, to reduce the speed of transmission of COVID-19 so as not to saturate the capacity of health systems, through measures of distancing and social isolation, including border closures, vehicle restrictions and control of citizens' freedom of movement. . This strategy has proven to be effective in terms of its impact on reducing the number of infected, although affecting economic activity.

The New Normal I

In this pandemic, the countries of the region are in the stage of "flattening the curve"; that is, to control the spread of the virus and avoid the collapse of the health system. But what happens next? What is the new normal?

Innovation in the pandemic: the other exponentiality

The capacity and scope of exponential technologies or the fourth industrial revolution have been present in initiatives, products and trends around the world to face the pandemic and its impacts. The variants of technological response to COVID-19 have been many and diverse.

National working groups

For the manufacture of personal protective equipment and medical devices

The purpose of this project is to support working groups in each of the Central American countries in the coordination of national efforts for the local manufacture of PPE for health professionals, such as masks, visors, gowns, gloves, caps. , and aerobox boxes, as well as ventilators for patients who will require hospitalization. These kits would be produced in faithful compliance with the protocols and standards of the national health authorities and the World Health Organization (WHO).

The pandemic and the disruption of the 2030 Agenda

The COVID-19 pandemic crisis continues to advance, at the time of writing this article, more than 2 million infected, more than 140 thousand deaths, and presence in 185 countries according to what was reported by the John Hopkins University. The epicenter of the crisis has moved from Wuhan in China, to Northern Italy and today to New York in the United States. In Latin America the progress and reporting of COVID-19 is slow but constant, although still no country in the region reaches the levels of European countries or the United States.

Two strategic pillars for countries during and after the pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic crisis continues to advance, as of today, April 8, there are 1,447,466 confirmed infected, 83,471 deaths, and presence in 184 countries according to what was reported by John Hopkins University. The epicenter of the crisis has moved from Wuhan in China, to Northern Italy and today to New York in the United States, where only yesterday they had 1,700 deaths and already accumulate 5,489.

The Pandemic Data-Knowledge Gaps

Due to the high level of contagion that Covid-19 has, the World Health Organization has requested that social distancing be applied; that is, keep at least 1 meter distance between you and other people, particularly those who cough, sneeze and have a fever. In order for everyone in Latin America to follow the instructions of the World Health Organization, the gaps in knowledge must be considered, generating information in formats that everyone can understand.

Management responses in times of COVID-19

In the COVID-19 pandemic, we are facing the worst crisis of our generation. This crisis poses enormous challenges for the management and survival of our companies. So we must take urgent action to protect our employees and their families as a top priority. And, at the same time, implement measures that help us "navigate this storm" and survive until a phase of economic reactivation hopefully prompt and accelerated.

The Pandemic Data-Access to water at home

The COVID-19 pandemic has spread rapidly globally; and in three months it already has a presence in 188 countries, including all of Latin America. To stop the spread of the virus, the WHO recommends washing your hands with soap and water; But in some countries, access to water in homes is still a lack that must be addressed.

See the data of access to water in the house for the countries of our region.

In most countries in the region, quarantines have been established, to a greater or lesser extent, as a mitigation mechanism to avoid the collapse of the health system. As if they were a reflection of what is happening in the rest of the world, among the seven countries in this region there are examples of governments that opted for the most drastic measures to prevent the entry of the coronavirus and others that are reluctant to implement them.
