Alajuela, October 20, 2010. The Latin American Center for Competitiveness and Sustainable Development of the INCAE Business School and the World Economic Forum held the workshop seminar today: "Central America in Times of Uncertainty: Challenges for Competitiveness and Sustainable Development" at the Walter Kissling Gam Campus of INCAE, in Costa Rica.

The seminar-workshop seeks, based on the results of the Global Competitiveness Report, to contribute to the creation of a regional agenda to address the challenges facing the region in the midst of the global economic crisis. During the event, the main barriers to competitiveness in Central American countries will be analyzed and alternative solutions will be explored. Of particular interest, the role of the private sector will be addressed in a development agenda that addresses regional problems.

The event is attended by renowned world experts on competitiveness issues, the valuable input of Central American businessmen and the support of Central American integration organizations. This initiative will serve as input for the construction of a regional development strategy, as discussed at the Extraordinary Meeting of Central American Heads of State, last July in El Salvador.

The inauguration will be in charge of Arturo Condo, Rector of INCAE Business School and Marisol Argueta, Senior Director for Latin America of the World Economic Forum. Professor Francisco de Paula Gutiérrez will present on "The Challenges of Central America in Times of Uncertainty" and Irene Mia, Director, Senior Economist of the Center for Competitiveness and Global Performance, of the World Economic Forum will present the results of the Global Competitiveness Report.

"The World Economic Forum has been analyzing the issue for many years (INCAE is its partner in the region) and presents its findings in its Global Competitiveness Report," says Professor Gutiérrez. He also adds that "this report identifies areas of attention and summarizes them in this Global Competitiveness Index, which is a good way to assess challenges in an uncertain environment, this being an important instrument to determine strengths and weaknesses of countries in search of greater competitiveness and, as such, very useful for the definition of a national and regional competitiveness agenda ".
